Flow over Force

Why your Business can
Grow Faster when you Slow Down

the Secret to running your Heart-centred Business Without the Hustle

If marketing feels harder than ever...
you're not imagining it.

These days, the online world moves super fast. Louder, quicker, and more saturated than any human nervous system was built for. With AI-generated content flooding every platform, the online space is louder and more crowded than ever. And in the middle of all that noise, you’re somehow supposed to make sure the right people see and understand the meaningful work you do.

It’s challenging for anyone, but for more sensitive, introspective solopreneurs, it can be downright overwhelming.

You’re wired differently - and your work requires that.
You need quiet time, rest, and balance to do what you do.
You listen deeply.
You guide transformation.

You do your best work when you have room to breathe -
time to think, feel, rest, restore.

You hold space for others, and you can only do that when you feel grounded.

And so you find yourself in a strange paradox:
You love your work deeply…  but sharing it can feel stressful, draining, or overstimulating. You weren’t made for the “churn-and-burn” pace of online visibility.

Marketing certainly hasn’t gotten easier - but there is a way to grow your business without losing yourself.

In this article, we’ll explore one essential piece of that gentler, more sustainable path - one pillar of what I call The Bloompreneur Way.

It’s adopting the strategy of Flow over Force.

When the Work You Love Starts to Feel Heavy

When you run your own business, it can feel like everything is calling for your attention at once.

There are emails to answer, clients to take care of, ideas to develop, offers to update, and new trends in your field to keep up with.

And on top of that, there’s the writing, the social media, the content, the sharing… all woven into the same day, all asking for space you don’t always have.

It’s so easy to slip into long hours behind your screen, trying to get to the end of the never-ending to-do list. There’s always one more thing you could do - one more post, one more improvement, one more tiny task. And because you need clients to sustain your business, the pressure to stay visible and active can feel relentless.

Slowly, the work you love can start to feel heavy… like something that drains you rather than nourishes you.

But a Bloompreneur knows something that isn’t talked about enough:
you actually work better when you work less - when you take breaks, when you honour your energy, and when you trust the natural rhythm of your mind.

This is what makes working on your business feel like flow instead of force.

While reading Deep Work by Cal Newport and Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman, I came across a few powerful ideas that felt less like new information and more like confirmation - words for things so many of us already feel intuitively.
That pushing harder rarely leads to clarity.
That our best ideas arrive in the quiet.
That rest is not a luxury but part of the work.
This is why Flow Over Force works so well...

Most of us think that the harder we push, the more we get done.
But psychologists have been discovering something very different...

Why Flow over Force works
the science behind it

Most of us think that the harder we push, the more we get done.
But psychologists have been discovering something very different.

1. We actually work better in small, steady rhythms.

In the 1990s, psychology professor Robert Boice was curious why some writers were consistently productive while others struggled for years. He discovered something unexpected about the most productive people:

They work in shorter, regular sessions and rarely work longer than 3-4 hours in one sitting, but are focused in that time.

They take weekends off.

They accept that their daily progress feel small.

They were emotionally steadier - less pushing, less self-criticism, more self-compassion.

They treated their work as a simple daily habit, not a huge effort that requires drama or pressure.

Meanwhile, the people that tried to force their way through with marathon work sessions were the ones who burned out, avoided work, wrestled with guilt, and got far less done.

Boice’s research reminds us of something many Bloompreneurs already know deep down:
Consistency and moving forward doesn’t come from pressure. It comes from small, doable moments of returning to the important things.

2. Why Your Attention Needs Rest to Work Well

Rachel & Stephen Kaplan, environmental psychologists from the US, discovered another piece of the puzzle. Their Attention Restoration Theory tells us that we use two very different kinds of attention; directed attention and involuntary attention.

Directed attention is the kind you use to be able to concentrate and work effectively; to plan, write, hold space for clients, stay present in a session. It’s powerful - but you don’t have an unlimited supply. When it’s depleted, everything becomes harder. You struggle to concentrate and you might feel overwhelmed, irritable, foggy, or discouraged. Even small tasks can start to feel like a mountain.

Then there’s effortless attention, sometimes called soft fascination. This is what happens when something gently captures your awareness without demanding anything from you - like watching leaves move in the wind, listening to birdsong, stirring a pot of soup, walking in nature, folding laundry, talking to someone you love, or doing something simple and repetative.

This kind of attention restores you.
The Kaplans found that when your directed attention is depleted, your brain actually needs this soft, effortless attention to recover. And that recovery is what brings back your clarity, your intuition, and your ability to do deep, meaningful work.

This is why you feel clear after a walk, a shower, gardening, cooking, or sitting quietly with a cup of tea. Your attention well fills up again and suddenly your work feels doable again.

Taking regular breaks isn’t being “lazy”, it’s being wise.

And it changes both how you feel and the quality of the work you’re able to do.

3. Clarity arrives while you take your breaks

When you’re trying to figure something out, it’s easy to get “stuck” behind the screen, staring, pushing, but really not getting anywhere.

There’s a simple idea from psychology, called Unconscious Thought Theory, that feels surprisingly true in everyday life: stepping away doesn’t take you further from clarity - it often brings you closer to it. This is similar to what the Kaplans found, but through a different mechanism. What it tells us:

It’s totally OK to take a break, because your deeper mind continues working on complex problems even when you’re not consciously thinking about them.

Things become clearer when you stop trying to force an answer. When you take a walk, fold the laundry, or step away from your screen for a moment, your mind finally gets the space it needs. It can sort through the pieces, make connections, and surface guidance you couldn’t access through effort alone.

You’ve probably felt this many times:
the idea that appears in the shower;
the solution that arrives on a walk;
the sentence that writes itself while you’re journaling.

Choosing flow over force isn’t about doing less.
It’s about creating the inner conditions for your deepest wisdom and best ideas to emerge.

When you build softness and pauses into your working rhythm, you’re not stepping away from your work.
You’re making room for the part of you that knows exactly what to do next.

~ Your Energy Matters ~

There’s another reason why Flow Over Force matters - one that most attuned business owners know intuitively.

Getting things done is important - but so is enjoying the journey.
The energy you bring into your work matters, because it becomes part of what you create.

When you write from stress or urgency, people can feel it.
When you record something while rushing, the tension is there.
When you create from overwhelm, your words land differently.

And the opposite is also true.

When you work from clarity, spaciousness, and presence, your creations hold that energy.
People can feel the difference - even if they don’t have the language for it.

Your message becomes warmer.
Your ideas become clearer.
Your offers become magnetic.
Your content resonates more deeply  because you created from a happy place.

Working with flow doesn’t just feel better -
it makes your work better.

Your presence is part of your product.
Your energy is part of your marketing.
The way you're wired is part of your brand.

This is why forcing feels so misaligned -
because it disconnects you from the very qualities that make your work powerful.

Flow puts you back into the place where your best work can actually happen.
Not rushed or forced.

Just naturally aligned, infused with the quiet “high vibes” that people recognize but can’t always name.

When you create from this place, your work doesn’t just reach people
- it touches them.

And there is another reason why your energy matters, because when you feel good you are open to abundance.

Hustlepreneurs believe that your results are a direct result of the amount of labour and sweat you put into something.

But for Bloompreneurs, it’s more about allowing than toiling.

Because when you’re in a good place, you’re naturally more open to receiving the clients, opportunities, and ideas that are already on their way to you.

~ How to Bring Flow over Force in Practice ~

Now that we’ve explored why Flow Over Force works, how can you put this into practice for a real workday?

Let’s look at what this can look like in everyday life in a way that feels doable!

Flow doesn’t happen by accident.
You can encourage it by adopting a bit of structure - the kind that supports you, not constricts you.

Start your day with grounding

Make yourself a warm drink, eat something nourishing, and settle into a space that feels calm and welcoming. A consistent little ritual like this helps your mind shift into focused, creative work time. A few intentional moments - a sip of tea, writing down your intentions for the day, or simply looking outside - can help you ease into a more receptive, steady state before you begin.

Begin with what Matters Most

Your clearest hours are precious!
Use them for the work that moves your business forward: the creative, strategic, or emotionally present tasks that need your best attention. Turn off notifications, close your inbox, and save busywork like posting on social media or answering emails for later in the day.

Work in Gentle Cycles

Your mind naturally works in rhythms. I personally love this simple pattern: about 45 minutes of focused work, then 10–15 minutes of rest. I stand up, stretch, step outside for a minute, or do something simple like folding the laundry. These short pauses help keep your body healthy (it needs movement!) and restore your ability to concentrate so you return to your work feeling refreshed instead of strained or tense. And just a small note: checking your messages or scrolling Instagram doesn’t create the same effect - your mind needs softness, not stimulation, to actually recover.

Let your environment support you

Small things make a surprising difference.
A tidy desk, natural light, a glass of water nearby - when your space feels calm, your work often does too. Einstein once joked: “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, what then is an empty desk a sign of?”

It’s hard to argue with a genius… but in this case, I will: I don’t agree. I know from experience that a calmer space helps me start from a calmer place.
But let’s be realistic:  of course brilliant work can happen from any space.  So let this support you, not stop you.
A tidy desk can be lovely, but it should never be a requirement to begin (otherwise I personally wouldn’t get much done… 😊)

flow over force - strategies for mindful solopreneurs - bloompreneurs

Not all days are smooth sailing - it's not necessary to always have perfect days, the secret is in learning how to recover fast so you can begin again.

When things don’t flow: flexibility as wisdom

A little Reality check...
It’s easy to imagine a beautifully structured, zen-like workday…
and then real life happens.

Noise, interruptions, low energy, emotional triggers, unexpected tasks - sometimes the day simply doesn’t want to collaborate with your best intentions. On those chaotic or overwhelming days, Flow Over Force becomes even more important.

Here are a few things that can help:

"

Notice when you’re starting to force

You can often feel the moment things get stressy - your shoulders tense, your mind feels foggy, or you catch yourself pushing through frustration.
That’s the signal to pause.

Take a longer break, step outside, stretch, or simply sit down with a cup of tea.
A few minutes of gentle selfcare can reset the entire trajectory of your day far better than another 30 minutes of pushing ever could. (Gentle reminder: scrolling social media doesn’t count as a reset… your system needs a rest, not more input.)

"

Use Tiny Beginnings

When starting feels impossible, lower the threshold.
Promise yourself that you’ll work for just 5, 10, or 15 minutes - whatever feels doable. Often, once you begin, momentum gently wakes up and carries you further than you expected. And if it doesn’t? That’s ok too.

You showed up, you tried, and it’s completely fine to rest. Some of my best writing has come from days when I almost didn’t start at all... Tiny Beginnings truly count.

"

Reset your system when you’re overwhelmed

Heart-centred, empathic solopreneurs often absorb more than they realize - a difficult message, a sad post, a bit of bad news.
Your system can get thrown off quickly.

When you feel anxious, overstimulated, or overwhelmed, try this
short breathing reset:

Set a timer for 5 minutes and breathe in this pattern;
4 seconds in – 4 seconds hold – 8 seconds out
(or 3–3–6 if that feels easier)
This pattern sends a “manual override” signal to your body:
all is well, you can relax.

It’s simple, but incredibly effective.
A few minutes of calm breathing can bring you back to a good place way faster than another hour of staring at your screen.

Please try it - it does miracles and can get you back in the flow surprisingly fast.

"

Be gentle with yourself on Hard Days

Try to avoid collapsing into doubt when things feel difficult.
Instead of analysing, ruminating, or wondering why you “can’t get it together,” take a break and rest. Things almost always feel clearer the next day.

For a long time, much of my stress came from being frustrated with myself - feeling like I should be doing more, or doing it better. My inner critic and perfectionist were running the show, and their relentless commentary only made everything harder.

When you truly understand that your emotional and energy ups and downs are simply part of life -  combined with how you’re naturally wired - you can redirect your energy toward restoring yourself, instead of getting tangled in negative self-talk.

That’s energy much better spent.

Through self-care and compassion you avoid sinking deeper into overwhelm, and you recover faster!

‘It’s easy to look at what is achievable in a single day and always come up short. But it is just as easy to underestimate what you can accomplish in a year.’

The dance between commitment and flexibility

There’s an intentional balance at the heart of Flow Over Force - a dance between having direction, but also staying flexible enough to move with your real life.

Goals & vision matter.
They give your days a sense of purpose and help you shape a business you’re proud of. They call you forward, give structure to your ideas, and keep you connected to what you’re building.

But the real magic isn’t in hitting every goal exactly as planned.
It’s in staying engaged with the process - gently, steadily, and in a way that honours your energy.

Some days you’ll feel clear and inspired.
Other days, everything will feel slow, muddy, or heavy. That’s normal. That’s life. Sustainable progress doesn’t come from forcing yourself through every dip; or beating yourself up that things are too slow -  it comes from learning to return to your work with inspiration and passion, again and again.

Slow and steady truly does win the race
- not because it’s slow, but because it’s steady.

Working with your natural rhythm, rather than against it, keeps you connected to your business without burning out your nervous system or your joy.
