Why & How - a good leadmagnet

A great leadmagnet makes it easy to grow your mailing list, a mediocre one often gets ignored....

That’s why it’s well worth taking a bit of time to reflect on what would genuinely work for your business — something that meets your ideal clients exactly where they are, and helps them with a real, meaningful win.

The best leadmagnets speak to a clear pain point and offer a small but valuable solution. That promise should come through right away in the title and tagline.

If you’re still unsure what yours should be — or you’ve already created one that isn’t doing much — don’t worry, I’ve been there too. I spent ages making freebies I loved, but people vote with their sign-ups… and mine just gathered digital dust.

In this deeper dive, we’ll look at what makes a leadmagnet truly work, how it fits into the buyer’s journey, and where to find the right idea for your audience. I’ll also share plenty of inspiration to help you come up with an idea for your leadmagnet that will actually do its job — growing your audience for you!

The importance of touch points ...

A touch point is simply any moment when someone comes across you or your business — maybe they read a blog post, see a social media post, or hear about you from a friend.

Before someone opts in to your lead magnet, those touch points are usually brief and occasional.

But once they say yes to your freebie and join your newsletter, everything changes. You now have a way to stay in touch — to show up regularly, offer real value, and gently build a relationship over time.

A great lead magnet opens that door. It’s what turns a passing glance into an ongoing connection — and gives you the chance to create many more touch points that deepen trust and curiosity.

When someone joins your mailing list you can...

share valuable tips, insights, and resources that continue to help them.

introduce yourself, your story, and your philosophy, so they start to know and trust you.

guide them toward deeper work by introducing your paid services and offers, showing them how you can truly help them solve their bigger challenges.

Every email you send, every piece of content you share, and every interaction you have becomes a new touch point—another opportunity to deepen the connection and build trust.

And that's super important because the buyer’s journey is rarely linear. Your clients need time to explore, reflect, and decide if they’re ready to take the next step. Your lead magnet ensures you stay part of their world during this process. It’s the bridge that connects their initial curiosity to the real transformation they can achieve by working with you.

Moreover, these touch points can be automated in your email marketing program, making them a more passive marketing strategy - ideal for mindful solopreneurs that value their time on airplane mode!

So let's find out what makes a great leadmagnet so you can put this strategy to good use for your business...

magnetic leadmagnets

So what makes a fantastic leadmagnet?  A wonderful, effective lead magnet captures attention, delivers value, and leaves your potential clients wanting more. Here are the key elements of an irresistible lead magnet:

1. Value: Meet Them Where They Are

Your lead magnet should feel substantial and useful, helping your potential clients with a real need they have at the start of their journey. But ... it’s important to remember that what people think they need early on is often different from what will truly solve their deeper challenges.  The best leadmagnets meet potential clients where they are while gently hinting at the bigger picture.

At this stage, they are often looking for simple, immediate solutions.
For example:

N

A person struggling with anxiety may be searching for quick relaxation techniques, not yet ready to dive into a complete life redesign.

N

Someone feeling overwhelmed might want a simple planner to get organized, rather than exploring the deeper causes of their stress.

It’s crucial to approach this from their perspective. Think about their surface-level concerns and what they believe they need right now. Your lead magnet should focus on delivering value for those immediate concerns, giving them relief, clarity, or a way forward for their symptoms.

However, a great lead magnet also hints at the bigger transformation that’s possible with your deeper work. It’s a starting point that says, “Here’s a small step to help you today, and there’s so much more we can do together when you’re ready.”

 A practical example

Here’s another example of something we developed with Karen of Parents and Co in the UK. She is a sleep consultant that specializes in helping parents and their highly sensitive children resolve sleep and bedtime challenges.

Plenty of parents have never heard yet of sensory sensitivity, all they know is that there is a lot of drama around bedtime and sleep and they are at the end of their tethers! That’s why her leadmagnet is focused on that: "How to fix the bedtime meltdown – 3 things you must try first for stress-free evenings."

In the emails that follow sign-up, she gentle introduces the idea of high sensitivity and how it can influence sleep, followed by a questionnaire that parents can fill in to discover if high sensitivity might be the reason and the clue to solving their challenges. This then naturally leads to presenting herself and her services as the expert in this field. You can see more about her work and her leadmagnet on her homepage here.

2: Quick Win - Solve a Meaningful but Small Problem

The best lead magnets give your audience an immediate sense of relief or progress. When you deliver a quick win, you show that you truly understand their needs and can provide real, actionable help—this builds trust right from the start.

A small, achievable solution creates momentum, helping your audience feel empowered and like they can make real progress instead of stuck or overwhelmed.

It also reduces the risk of scaring them off with too much information or complexity, keeping things light and manageable.

People remember how you made them feel, so when your lead magnet gives them a positive experience, they’ll associate that with you & your business and want to keep hearing from you. Plus, a quick win is more likely to be used and appreciated—unlike an overwhelming resource that ends up forgotten in their downloads folder.

Finally, a quick, actionable step hints at bigger possibilities. It solves a piece of their problem and leaves them curious about what else you can help them achieve when they’re ready for the next step.

3: Relevance - Make It a Natural Next Step

Your lead magnet isn’t just a freebie—it’s the first step toward working with you. It should naturally align with your paid services or programs so that the people who love your freebie are the same people who would benefit from your deeper offerings.

Think of it this way: if someone downloads your lead magnet, they’re showing interest in what you have to offer. The question to ask yourself is, “If they loved this, would they want to learn more from me?”

For example, if you’re a life coach helping people manage stress, a guide like “5-Minute Relaxation Techniques” is an easy quick fix introduction.

It offers immediate value and gives them a taste of what it’s like to work with you—opening the door to your full coaching program when they’re ready for deeper support.

4: Professional Presentation - Make It Beautiful

First impressions matter! A beautifully designed lead magnet can make a big difference in how many people say yes to ending up on your newsletter.

E

Use tools like Canva to create PDFs, planners, or checklists that look gorgeous and professional.

E

Use your branding—colors, fonts, and logos—to make sure your lead magnet feels in line with the rest of your business.

E

Even a simple freebie can feel premium with a clean, attractive layout.

5: Connection - Introduce Yourself and Your Story

Your lead magnet isn’t just about the content; it’s also an opportunity to start building a relationship.

9

Include a short section where you introduce yourself. Share a bit about your journey, why you’re passionate about what you do, and how you can help.

9

This personal touch helps your audience feel a connection with you, laying the foundation for trust and future engagement.

For example, you could add an introduction page with a friendly note like:

“Hi, I’m [Your Name]! I’m so glad you’ve found this resource. As someone who’s been [describe your personal journey briefly], I know how important it is to [insert the benefit of your lead magnet]. I’m here to help you take the next step!”

Don’t miss this opportunity to show up as your warm and friendly self, show that you care, and share where people can learn more about your other offers!

~ 200 examples of leadmagnets ~

A while back I participated in "Freebie Fest" organized by Tara Reid. She curated the 200 most value packed leadmagnets out there from hundreds of entries, my own Visual guide to Marketing-savvy Web Pages got included also 🙂

At the time I made a screenshot with a browser extension of all the freebies in there, because I felt it was such a handy collection for inspiration and to see ideas of what other people are doing with their titles and topics. This PDF is not perfect, you'll see that some of the entries or graphics fell on the PDF page transition line, but nonetheless I feel it can be very helpful for when you're still brainstorming about your own!

~ some practical tips for creating your leadmagnet ~

Use Canva for Beautiful Templates

First impressions are important and a beautiful front cover says so much in one glance! Your lead magnet should look professional and polished to reflect the quality of your work. Canva is a helpful tool for creating gorgeous PDFs, planners, checklists, and more.

Add Your Personality and Story

I’ve mentioned it before, but don’t forget to add a small introduction about who you are and why you’re passionate about this topic can make your lead magnet feel more personal. This builds connection and trust, setting the stage for a deeper relationship with your audience.

Choose a smart title

If possible, include the problem and what you are helping them avoid or overcome in your leadmagnet title.

Don't forget your Call-to-Action

Your lead magnet is the first step in your client’s journey with you. Make it easy for them to take the next step by including a clear and friendly call-to-action (CTA). For example:

  • “Enjoyed these tips? Discover how my full program can help you create lasting results!”
  • “Want to go deeper? Check out my workshop on this topic here.”

Show a Sneak Peek on Your Website or Landing Page

Get more sign-ups by showing a thumbnail preview of your beautiful lead magnet. A mock-up of the cover, a screenshot of a page, or a brief description of what they’ll get inside can make your offer more appealing. Highlight the benefits and quick win they’ll receive by downloading it in your copy.

Make It Easy to Access

Automate the delivery of your lead magnet through automating it using email marketing tools that send the resource directly to their inbox after they sign up. This ensures a seamless and professional experience  and is the standard nowadays. In the course that comes with our Divine DIY Website Pack, we show you step by step how to set everything up.

~ to conclude ~

Your lead magnet is a powerful tool in your buyer’s journey—it’s the key that opens the door to deeper connection, engagement and plenty of touch points with your potential clients.

For mindful solopreneurs, it’s especially valuable because it's a more hands off strategy: once someone opts in, you can use email automations to share more valuable insights, provide ongoing support, and build trust—all on autopilot.

This passive yet effective strategy works for you even when you’re away from your laptop, giving you the freedom to focus on what truly matters while still growing your business.

I hope this deep dive has given you all the info and plenty of ideas to create your own!
